Methven A&P Show 2026

Methven A&P Show 2026 was Hollybank Ring of Fire’s time to shine.

The weekend prior at Mayfield A&P Show “Dragon” was awarded Champion Purebred Welsh. At Methven she was awarded Champion Inhand Purebred Welsh and Supreme Welsh Exhibit, then went on to take out the Supreme Inhand Horse/Pony of the Show. A fabulous finish to the season, ably turned out and shown by Sophie Burkin, who is currently breaking her in.

Canterbury Welsh Show 2026

Hollybank Riviera attended her second and final show for the 2025/26 season, the 2026 Canterbury Welsh Show held in Leeston.

The result was a carbon copy of the South Island All Welsh Show, with River being awarded Champion Section B Adult, Supreme Section B Exhibit and Supreme Inhand Purebred, receiving a WPCS Gold Medal, under judges Ashley and Scarlett Porter from Australia.

South Island All Welsh Show 2025

A beautiful sunny day for the South Island All Welsh Show, after a massive thunderstorm a couple of nights beforehand resulted in some of the ponies breaking through fences on the farm in the middle of the night.

Injuries were minor but enough to keep a couple of the show team at home, so we only ended up taking a mare and foal and one youngstock pony.

Hollybank Riviera (Lemonshill Top Note x Imperial Revue) had a fantastic show, winning Champion Section B Mare/Stallion, Best Section B Exhibit and going on to take out the Supreme Inhand Purebred Award, receiving a WPCS Gold Medal. Her foal Hollybank River Island (Hollybank Masterclass) was awarded Best Purebred/Partbred Foal of the Show.

Hollybank River of Dreams (Imperial Messiah x Imperial Revue) won the Champion Section B Youngstock Colt/Filly.

Southland Welsh Show 2025

The annual roadie to Gore to attend the Southland Welsh Championship Show.

Having two mares due to foal nearly derailed the trip, but luckily both of them decided to foal just a couple of days beforehand! Hollybank River of Dreams aka Matilda had a great show, coming home with Champion Section B Youngstock, Runner-up Supreme Purebred Exhibit and topped it off with winning the Best Overall Movement Sash. Once again the biggest thanks to chief pony handler Sophie Burkin and fellow roadie/helper/entertainer/supporter Catherine Williams for making the trip down and making it a very enjoyable weekend!

Southland Welsh Pony & Cob Club always put on a great show with a lovely friendly and welcoming atmosphere.

Royal NZ Ag Show 2025

NZ Royal Show 2025 hosted by Canterbury A&P Assn. After cracking days both before and after, we picked the worst day to attend, a day when you might question your sanity for even getting out of bed at 5am.

An accident on the motorway delaying us getting to the show and another accident on the way home.

After enduring the sodden conditions, Hollybank River of Dreams (Imperial Messiah x Imperial Revue) managed to supply some highlights, winning Champion Welsh Youngstock, Grand Champion Purebred Welsh and then took out the Royal Supreme Welsh Exhibit under UK judge Beverley Moore.

Hollybank Ring of Fire (Imperial Messiah x Hollybank Riviera) was second in the Sec B mare/gelding class and Reserve Champion Mare/Gelding.

I must say thanks once again to Sophie Burkin for all the help before and during the show, getting ready, getting ponies there and back, and a sterling job leading on the day in the awful conditions. I think it was one of the wettest shows I’ve ever been to!

Canterbury All Breeds Foal & Youngstock Show 2025

A lovely day out at the Canterbury All Breeds Foal & Youngstock Show with Hollybank Snow Man (Nawarrah Park Lady’s Man) and Hollybank Peek-a-Boo (Hollybank Antonio).

We stepped out of our comfort zone and did some non-welsh classes as well, with Snow Man winning Champion Pony Hunter Foal as well as Champion Section B Welsh Foal, and Peek-a-Boo was Champion Led Pony Foal.

NZWPCS Sire Ratings Award 2025

Nawarrah Park Lady’s Man is now 22 years old and has had a stranglehold on the Gunthwaite Trophy for the NZWPCS Section B Sire Ratings since 2012.

At the AGM prize giving in June he again didn’t disappoint, having 5 progeny scoring points for him this season: Cedar Park Regal Man, Hollybank Wee Whisper, Hollybank Moonshadow, Hollybank Snow Man and Hollybank Angel Dust.

Very exciting this year was also having Imperial Messiah finish in second place, completing the double for Hollybank Stud. He was also represented by 5 progeny: Hollybank River Song, Hollybank River of Dreams, Hollybank Stolen Kisses, Hollybank Sunshine and Hollybank Ring of Fire.

From George Howe, Nawarrah Park Stud - Hollybank Chantilly (NZ) - Victorian All Welsh Show, Champion led Welsh Mare under judge Beate Reipen (GER).

Making her debut at this show last year she won her led mare and took reserve champion ridden Welsh B. This year Tilly has really blossomed as a mature mare and this championship means so much to her associated owners / breeder Dawn Elliott and Carmen Harrison. Tilly's dam was bred by us Nawarrah Park Camilla (NP Charisma / NP Lady's Man) and her sire is Imperial Messiah (Imperial Pavarotti). Naturally I jumped at the chance to take on this gorgeous mare. Thank you to the generous sponsors of the class Vanoca Park Stud and the hard working show committee and volunteers. The weather really tested us with 35 degrees then solid rain but everyone enjoyed a great show regardless.

We had an incredible show and are always grateful to everybody behind the scenes and in the ring who support us at the event x.

Messiah On Tour

In a joint effort to help with the improvement and numbers of the Section B welsh ponies in the North Island, one of Hollybank Stud’s imported stallions, Imperial Messiah, has made the long trip up to Auckland where he will be on lease to Fleur Kern for the next three years. He will also be available to outside mares during this time.

NZWPCS Sire Rating 23/24

For the 10th year in succession Hollybank Stud’s resident stallion Nawarrah Park Lady’s Man has won the Gunthwaite Trophy for the NZWPCS Section B Sire Ratings. Lady’s Man has held this award continuously since 2012, with there being two years of no competitions during covid in 2020/2021. This year he was represented by 4 progeny, Hollybank Crusader, Hollybank Wee Whisper, Hollybank Justin Time and Cedar Park Regal Man.

Homebred stallion Hollybank Antonio also finished 3rd in this competition, his first year of being represented by progeny at ratings shows.

A Royal Champion and Best Purebred Welsh Exhibit at the Marlborough Royal Show. Champion Section B Mare/Stallion at the South Island All Welsh Show. Champion Section B Adult and Supreme Section B at the Canterbury Welsh Show. Champion Section B Adult and Runner-up Supreme Purebred Welsh Exhibit at the Southland Welsh Show. Hollybank Masterclass

Hollybank Masterclass (Hollybank Antonio x Amaranda Moondance) made his debut in the show ring as a yearling in November 2023. First up was the Marlborough Royal Show in Blenheim where he was sashed Royal Champion Welsh Youngstock, next the NZ Agricultural Show in Christchurch where he was Reserve Champion Welsh Youngstock, and the highlight of the season being at the South Island All Welsh Show in December where he was awarded Champion Welsh Youngstock under judge Michael Gates from Australia and then went on to receive Runner-up Supreme Purebred Welsh Exhibit.

Excited for the newest member of Nawarrah Park Welsh Ponies, Cobs and Connemara Stud show team, Hollybank Chantilly (Imp NZ), after only a few weeks preparation, attended her first show under saddle, winning her Ridden B Mare and Reserve Champion Ridden B at the Victorian All Welsh Show. Megan Howe did a wonderful job riding and showing her. Tilly is very special to us, being out of Nawarrah Park Camilla (NP Lady’s Man x NP Carisma) and sired by Imperial Messiah. She was also second in the Led Newcomer and Led Senior Mare. Carmen Harrison and Dawn Elliott, you should be very proud of Tilly!

After attending the NZ Welsh Pony & Cob Society AGM in Palmerston North, Nawarrah Park Lady’s Man has again been awarded the Gunthwaite Trophy for the Section B Sire Ratings. This is the 9th consecutive year he has won this, scoring points from three of his progeny, Hollybank Crusader, Hollybank Justin Time and Hollybank Moonshadow. A very exciting day out at the 2023 Canterbury All Breeds Foal Show for Hollybank Stud. Showing just the one foal, Hollybank River of Dreams (Imperial Messiah x Imperial Revue) “Matilda” was awarded Champion Section B Welsh Foal, Supreme Purebred Welsh Foal and then went on to win the Supreme All Breeds Foal Award.

Visit from Bamborough

In April 2023 it was very exciting to be visited by Rob Grant and Kylie Hickman from Bamborough Stud in Australia. Having purchased and imported two Bamborough weanling fillies over 10 years ago, and visiting Bamborough Stud again many times since, it was really special to be able show Rob and Kylie where their fillies had ended up, and also for them to see the many offspring of those fillies that have helped to shape Hollybank Stud. Canterbury Welsh Show 2023

A special show for Canterbury in 2023 with it being their 40th Anniversary Show. On a typically hot, dry Canterbury day, Hollybank Stud attended with two ponies and scored a lucky double under judge Anthony Dean from Australia. Hollybank Riviera (Lemonshill Top Note x Imperial Revue) was awarded Champion Section B Adult and Hollybank Santa Maria (Lemonshill Falcon x Skibbereen Serenity) was awarded Champion Section B Youngstock, with Santa Maria going on to take out Supreme Section B Exhihit.

Ashburton A&P Show 2021

A great day out at the 2020 Ashburton A&P Show. Hollybank Chipmunk (Imperial Messiah x Nawarrah Park Camilla) was Champion Purebred Welsh Adult and Supreme Welsh Exhibit. Big thanks to Charlotte Roberts for the fabulous job on the end of the lead.

South Island All Welsh Show 2021

Things didn’t quite go to plan at the South Island All Welsh show in Ashburton at the weekend. With Keyi Carwen showing some slight lameness in her first class and having to retire, it was left up to Hollybank Chipmunk (Imperial Messiah x Nawarrah Park Camilla) to save the day. “Chippy” was awarded Champion Section B Gelding, Best Section B Exhibit, Grand Champion Purebred Gelding and was Runner-Up Supreme Purebred Welsh Exhibit. Big thanks to Natasha Waddell for a great job leading.

Hollybank Chipmunk (Imperial Messiah x Nawarrah Park Camilla) made his inhand debut at the age of 4 years at the 2021 Canterbury Breeders Show yesterday. He was awarded Champion Purebred Welsh Gelding, Best Overall Welsh Gelding and then Supreme All Breeds Gelding from approx 12 different breeds. One year ago when visiting Keyi Stud in Australia I met a pretty little roan filly and fell in love, never dreaming that I would get the chance to buy her. Huge thanks to Janet and Chris Murphy for allowing me to purchase Keyi Carwen (Waxwing Peru x Keyi Confetti).

After arriving in New Zealand, Carwen, myself and Charlotte Roberts headed off to Gore at the weekend to attend the Southland Welsh Championship Show. Carwen didn’t disappoint and came home with Champion Purebred Welsh Youngstock and then took out the Supreme Inhand Purebred Welsh Exhibit.

WPCS International Online Show 2020

A nice surprise arrived in the post today, rosettes from the WPCS International Online Show! There were entries from 10 countries, Australia, Finland, UK, Germany, Czech Republic, Belgium, Netherlands, Norway, Canada and New Zealand. I was stoked to get 4 placings from 5 entries.

Section B Stallion 4-8 years: 2nd Place Hollybank Choirboy

Section B Broodmare over 8 years: 3rd Place Imperial Revue

Section B Filly or Gelding 3 years: 5th Place Hollybank Crusader

Section B colt 2 years: 6th Place Hollybank Antonio.

WPCS AGM 2020

Due to the coronavirus pandemic the WPCS AGM this year was a very short and sweet affair, held on Saturday afternoon at Wellington Airport.

Never the less, there was still a good turnout and it was pleasing to see a good contingent of young members there. I have moved up a step from South Island Vice-President and have now been elected President of the Society, so looking forward to the next 12 months of leading the Society in the best way possible in such trying times.

I am also delighted to announce that Nawarrah Park Lady’s Man has won the Section B Sires Ratings Award for the 8th year in a row, scoring points from just 4 purebred progeny for the season: Hollybank Crusader, Hollybank Wee Whisper, Te Hepe White Cloud and Jubilee Silver Knight. In addition to this, for the first time, he has also won the Willow Trophy, which is for purebred stallions with partbred progeny, scoring points from 2 partbred progeny: Hollybank Blue Belle and Haselor Park First Edition.

A great show season as a two year old for Hollybank Antonio (Lemonshill Top Note x Bamborough Alexia). At the 2020 AGM he was awarded the NZWPCS Punga Trophy (for most points overall for inhand showing throughout NZ) for the second year in a row.

Antonio will now have a break from the show ring and next season will be concentrating on the ladies!

Isolation has given me some time to finally purchase photos from our wonderful season with Hollybank Blue Belle. She has had a great season with some highlights being Supreme Led Pony at the NZ Ag Show, Supreme Led Pony, Supreme Led Welsh and Overall Champion Pony on the Grounds at Ashburton A&P and numerous other champions and supremes. Very excited to bring her out under saddle next season!

HOY 2020

What a day it turned out to be for Hollybank Stud on our first ever trip to Horse of the Year in Hastings. Hollybank Crusader (Nawarrah Park Lady’s Man x Amaranda Charmian) backed up his Supreme Exhibit at the North Island Welsh Show on Saturday by taking out the Youngstock Welsh Pony of the Year Title. Hollybank Antonio (Lemonshill Top Note x Bamborough Alexia) also placed third in the Youngstock Title Class.

Next up it was time to shine for Hollybank Choirboy (Lemonshill Top Note x Amaranda Charmian) who won the Adult Welsh Pony of the Year Title from a class of 32 ponies.

Huge thanks to all my leaders and helpers, Abby Sinclair, Sarah Cronin, Lily Moss/KS Show Horses.

After such an amazing trip, time to head back to the South Island with the threat of lockdown from the coronavirus pandemic hanging over us.

The Road to HOY

Part one of Hollybank Stud’s “epic road trip” to Horse of the Year started with the North Island Welsh Show in Taupo. Travelling up from the South Island with Philip Peter and Caroline, Olivia and Izzy of Te Hepe Stud and 4 Section B Welsh ponies, we battled a detached axle from Phil’s horsefloat and a transmission oil failure of my ute on the way, taking three days to get to Taupo.

The show produced some fabulous results for Hollybank Crusader (Nawarrah Park Lady’s Man x Amaranda Charmian) under Judge Helen Dohan from Australia. He was awarded Champion Section B Youngstock, Supreme Section B Exhibit, Champion Gelding Overall, Champion Youngstock Overall and Supreme Purebred Welsh Exhibit plus WPCS Gold Medal.

Thank you to all involved with the North Island Welsh show including organisers, volunteers and sponsors etc, you put on a great show and were very welcoming to us southerners on our first big trip up north. It was great to meet new people and put some faces to some names.

Huge thanks to Majestic Horse Transport who accommodated all the ponies and ourselves when we were stranded in Bulls for the night. And a very special thank you to Charlotte Roberts who came to the rescue and drove up from Palmerston North to help and lead ponies for me.

Next stop Hastings and HOY 2020! .

South Island All Welsh Show 2020

A huge mission and some great results for Hollybank Stud at the South Island All Welsh Show at the weekend.

Hollybank Stolen Kisses (Imperial Messiah x Skibbereen Serenity) took out the Champion Senior Section B Mare, Grand Champion Purebred Mare and Supreme Inhand Purebred Exhibit, winning a NZWPCS gold medal and the Vi Nicholls Memorial Salver.

Hollybank Royal Command (Imperial Messiah x Bendigo Royal Charm) took out Champion Section B Gelding, Grand Champion Purebred Gelding, Champion Ridden Section B, Champion Ridden Novice Purebred and the Supreme Ridden Purebred Exhibit. Both follow in the footsteps of their mothers, Skibbereen Serenity and Bendigo Royal Charm, who are previous Supreme Inhand Purebred winners at the South Island Show.

Congratulations to the Supreme Inhand Partbred Exhibit, Haselor Park First Edition (bred and shown by her owner Natasha McFarlane) who is by Hollybank Stud's Nawarrah Park Lady's Man. And congratulations also to Supreme Lead Rein/First Ridden Exhibit Cedar Park Regal Man (Nawarrah Park Lady’s Man x Bendigo Precious Gem) who is currently on lease to Sarah and Olive Cronin.

I have to say a massive thank you to Lauren Farquhar who made it entirely possible to get 9 ponies to the show, as well as doing her usual top job of leading and riding. Thanks also to my other two super handlers Sarah May Cronin and Abby Sinclair. And to Natasha Waddell for schooling the two ridden ponies prior to the show.

Huge thanks also to my team of helpers and pony holders who did an amazing job (especially having to stand round in the rain) Rahn, Kim, Lissa, Rowan, Lynne, Paul and Cath, and to Phil and Caroline for helping with pony transport.

Southland Welsh Championship Show 2019

A successful road trip to the Southland Welsh Championship Show in Gore at the weekend with Hollybank Antonio (Lemonshill Top Note x Bamborough Alexia). “Tony” came away with Champion Section B Youngstock and was then Runner-Up Supreme Purebred Exhibit. At the 2019 AGM of the NZ Welsh Pony & Cob Society I was re-elected onto the Council for a second term as South Island Vice President.

Nawarrah Park Lady’s Man was again awarded the Gunthwaite Trophy for winning the Section B Sires Ratings, for the 7th year in succession.

Hollybank Blue Belle

Hollybank Blue Belle is a yearling partbred welsh filly by Nawarrah Park Lady’s Man out of an Irish x TB mare “Belle”. Blue Belle was sold to Colleen Roberts who exhibited her at the South Island All Welsh Show, she also had a particularly good day winning Champion Large Partbred, Grand Champion Partbred Junior and going on to be awarded Supreme Inhand Partbred Exhibit together with a NZWPCS Bronze Medal.

South Island Welsh Show 2019

The 2019 South Island All Welsh Show was a very special for Hollybank Crusader (Nawarrah Park Lady’s Man x Amaranda Charmian). Attending his first ever show at the age of two years under Australian judge Elizabeth D’hondt, “Colin” was awarded Champion Section B Gelding, Best Section B Exhibit, Grand Champion Purebred Gelding and went right though to win Supreme Purebred Welsh Exhibit along with a NZWPCS Silver Medal. A big thank you to Karolina Dyszy for helping with the show prep and to Abby Sinclair for leading Colin on the day.

Hollybank Stud had a fantastic weekend at the 2019 Canterbury Welsh Show held on the 20th and 21st January with yearling colt Hollybank Antonio (Lemonshill Top Note x Bamborough Alexia). “Tony” was awarded Champion Section B Youngstock, Best Section B Exhibit and Supreme Purebred Welsh, receiving a NZWPCS Gold Medal, followed by Supreme Inhand Exhibit. This meant he had to return the following day where he won the Catherine Howell Trophy for the Supreme Exhibit of the Show (between Supreme Inhand/Ridden/Harness).

Hollybank Stud has some exciting foals to look forward to in the 2019 breeding season. After importing frozen semen from Lemonshill Falcon in the UK, two mares at Hollybank have been confirmed infoal to him, Bamborough Alexia and Skibbereen Serenity. Imperial Revue has also been to the AI centre and we are just awaiting confirmation that she too is infoal.

Lemonshill Falcon is by Douthwaite Signwriter out of Lemonshill Firecrest. He is a previous Cuddy Finalist, Royal Welsh Male Champion 2016, under saddle HOYS and Olympia finalist. Sire of Supreme Champions inhand and under saddle. Sire of the 2017 SSPS Supreme Champion and the 2018 Futurity Top Yearling in the UK across all disciplines.

Yearling colt Hollybank Antonio made his show ring debut at the New Zealand Agricultural Show in November 2018. After injuring my knee prior to the show I was unable to lead Tony myself, but luckily Sarah Fitzgerald was on hand to take over the reins. They had a fantastic day, with Tony winning the Supreme Welsh Exhibit in the morning and then going on to win the Supreme All Breeds Award in the afternoon, an incredible achievement for such a young colt at his first ever show.

Ten days later Tony was off to Nelson to attend the Royal Show where he scored an RAS Royal Champion and RAS medal.

Another week after that he headed down to Gore to the Southland Welsh Show where he had another fabulous day, winning the Supreme Overall Purebred Welsh Exhibit.

The year was finished off at the South Island Premier Championship Show in Christchurch where Tony was again awarded the Supreme Welsh Exhibit.

It was fantastic to have a visit today from JoAnna Faircloth of the Canterbury Equine Clinic. Jo (from Canada) saved the lives of both Tooravale Jacaranda (Jackie) and Hollybank Justin Time (Joey) when Jackie had to have major colic surgery mid-way through her pregnancy. Cannot thank Jo enough for her expertise and it was lovely to have her pop in to see how Jackie and Joey were doing.

I made the trip up to this year’s AGM held in Palmerston North and was elected to the position of South Island Vice President of the NZWPCS Council.

Nawarrah Park Lady’s Man once again won the Section B Sires Rating Award, this is the sixth year in succession he has won this. He also repeated the double from last year of winning the Sires Rating award and being the sire of the Punga Trophy Inhand Points winner, last year with Skibbereen Serenity (owned by Hollybank Stud) and this year with Hollybank Wee Whisper (owned by Te Hepe Stud).

Bendigo Royal Charm

It was decided after the 2018 South Island All Welsh Show that Bendigo Royal Charm aka Milly would be retired from the show ring. Milly has had a spectacular show career, including winning the Supreme All Breeds Award at the Canterbury Breeders Show in 2010 when she was just two years old and was Runner-Up Supreme All Breeds there in 2016. She was Supreme Inhand Exhibit at the Canterbury Welsh Show for 4 years in a row from 2014-2017 and Supreme Purebred Exhibit at the South Island All Welsh Show in 2017 and 2018, winning 4 WPCS gold medals and 2 silver medals, along with many other Champions and Supremes along the way and some years off in between having babies. "Queen Milly" would now like to reign supreme in the paddock at home, bossing everyone around because she knows that she really is the Queen, and will be having some more babies....after producing 4 colts we are hoping the filly fairy might finally pay her a visit!

Methven A&P Show 2018

Cedar Park Regal Man (Nawarrah Park Lady's Man x Bendigo Precious Gem) is having a terrific new career under saddle and is currently out on lease to Cath and Stella Williams from Springston.

The 2017 Canterbury Welsh Show was a very special one for Bendigo Royal Charm. She started out the day with Champion Section B Adult and Supreme Section B Exhibit, and then won the Supreme Paced Exhibit followed by Supreme Purebred Exhibit (Gold Medal).

She finished the day off with Supreme Inhand Exhibit of the Show, the fourth successive year that she has achieved this, and under international judges for each of the four years.

In December 2016 we headed off to Gore for the Southland Welsh Show with Skibbereen Serenity. Her successful return to the show ring continued, with Champion Section B Adult and once again Supreme Purebred Welsh Exhibit under judge David James from Sianwood Stud in Wales. Northern A&P Show October 2016

The 2016 Northern A&P Show was a Royal Event and being that Nawarrah Park Lady's Man had never had the opportunity to compete at a Royal Show, he was literally dragged out of the paddock after almost two years of retirement from the show ring to attend the show in Rangiora.

As it was also my birthday, it was a special day when he ended up winning a Royal Supreme Welsh Exhibit. He then tied for first place in the All Breeds Supreme which eventually went to the Riding Pony, but as ever he was the perfect gentleman and I'm pretty sure he enjoyed the day out of his paddock!

Bendigo Royal Charm (Milly) also attended the 2016 Canterbury Horse & Pony Breeders Show. The day didn't start well for me, after Milly won Champion Adult Welsh under judge Daniel Harvey from Australia, a leg injury to myself forced me to hand over the lead to Maia Waretini. This didn't actually turn out to be a bad thing....after leading Milly to Supreme Welsh Exhibit, Maia and Milly then went forward to the Supreme All Breeds Award.

Maia went for it and did the best run-out I have ever seen Milly do....they came close and out of 12 breeds Milly finished Runner-up Supreme All Breeds behind the very well known Riding Pony Maxwellton Penelope Pitstop. Incidentally, Milly won the Supreme All Breeds here six years ago on her first attendance as a two year old. Also in attendance were Hollybank Wee Whisper, who was again Champion Welsh Youngstock, and Cedar Park Regal Man (Nawarrah Park Lady's Man) who was Supreme Welsh Gelding.

A few days after the Canterbury All Welsh Show we were delighted to have a stud visit from the Australian judges Janet Murphy of Keyi Stud and Anthony Deane of Llanfairbryn Stud, escorted by Shirley Bennett of Glendale Stud. Once again, wonderful to have the chance to show off the rest of the ponies at the Stud to the visiting international judges.

The 2016 Canterbury All Welsh Show was another great one for Hollybank Stud with Bendigo Royal Charm winning the Champion Section B Adult, Supreme Section B, Best NZ Bred and, for the third year in a row, went on to take out the Supreme Overall Exhibit.

After visiting Heniarth Stud, the following day I went to the Cadlanvalley Stud of Howell and Yvonne Davies at St Dogmaels, Cardigan, Wales. I found myself in "horsey heaven" surrounded by beautiful palomino ponies (my favourite colour!). Once again another lovely afternoon spent with lovely people admiring the stunning Section B Welsh ponies from Wales. I also had the pleasure of meeting Cadlanvalley Miss Prim, a yearling filly who went on to win the yearling section B filly class at the 2015 Royal Welsh.

In June 2015 I attended the New Zealand Welsh Pony & Cob Society AGM in Timaru. At the prize giving Nawarrah Park Lady's Man was awarded the Section B Sires Ratings for the third consecutive year. Second in command at Hollybank Stud, the imported stallion Imperial Messiah finished in second place behind Lady's Man. Lady's Man's daughter Nawarrah Park Camilla also finished second in the Punga Trophy Competition for most points over all NZ in inhand showing.

The 2015 Canterbury Welsh show was pretty much a repeat of the 2014 show for Hollybank Stud, with Bendigo Royal Charm and Hollybank Royal Silver once again being awarded the mother/son double of Champion Section B Adult and Champion Section B Youngstock respectively. Bendigo Royal Charm was Supreme Section B and again went right through to take out the Supreme Exhibit of the Show. Her current foal Hollybank Royal Command, who also attended the show with mum, won the Best Foal Award.

Hollybank Stud made a record effort and took 8 ponies to the 2015 South Island Welsh Show. We had some extra troops down from the North Island to assist with preparation and leading in the form of Kylie and Hailey James from Onika Stud, as well as Jenna Hansen who has also been helping out this season. Bendigo Royal Charm was Champion Section B Senior with Skibbereen Serenity Reserve. Bamborough Pick'n'Mix was Champion Section B Junior with Hollybank Victory Dance Reserve. Cedar Park Regal Man was Champion Section B Gelding with Hollybank Royal Silver Reserve. Hollybank Royal Command (pictured) won the Section B foal class and then went on to win Best Welsh Foal of Show, Bendigo Royal Charm was Best Section B Exhibit and then went on to win Grand Champion Purebred Mare and Cedar Park Regal Man was Grand Champion Purebred Welsh Gelding.

The day after the South Island Welsh Show Australian judges Darryl King from Victoria, and Kathryn Mitchell from Dalbrae Stud, Adelaide, along with Kathryn's mum Marlene Mitchell visited Hollybank Stud, escorted by our New Zealand Welsh Pony & Cob Society President Kevin Townsend. After the pony tour we all headed up to Terrace Downs for lunch, Kevin, Kathryn and Marlene then headed off to the airport while Darryl got taken on a local farm tour courtesy of Francis Royston. He then stayed the night, his chef skills came out and he cooked a lovely dinner for us all!

Nawarrah Park Lady's Man went into semi-retirement this season, having only attended two of the early shows. As Methven A&P Show was the last show of the season and Lady's Man was standing at the gate awaiting his turn and looking a million dollars, it was decided he could come out of "retirement" to attend our local Methven Show. He was a real gentleman on the day and seemed to really enjoy being out again, he had a cracker of a show coming home with Champion Adult Welsh, Supreme Welsh Exhibit and Supreme Inhand Exhibit of the Show. His son Hollybank Royal Silver was also in attendance and they completed the father/son double of Champion Adult/Champion Youngstock in the welsh section.

On the last weekend of November Hollybank Stud once again made the big trip south, this time taking four ponies. On the Saturday we went to Balclutha A&P show with two ponies, Cedar Park Regal Man was Champion Welsh and little brother Hollybank Royal Silver was Reserve Champion. On Sunday we headed to Gore in 4 degs and sleety showers to the Southland Welsh Show. We considered putting the ponies on the floats and heading home as we were sure the show would be cancelled, but in true Southland style everyone turned up and carried on as usual, with instructions for us to wear our gumboots out in the ring! Cedar Park Regal Man was Champion Section B Adult and Hollybank Victory Dance was Champion Section B Youngstock and went on to be Runner-up Supreme Purebred Welsh.

The 2014 Canterbury A&P Show was a day to remember for Hollybank Stud. Nawarrah Park Camilla was making her first ever appearance at Canterbury and the day started well with her winning Champion Mare/Gelding and then taking out Supreme Welsh Exhibit under judge Robert Parker-Jones from the UK. Dad Nawarrah Park Lady's Man was Champion Welsh Stallion and daughter Hollybank Chantelle was Reserve Champion Welsh Youngstock. Nawarrah Park Camilla then finished up the day by winning the Inhand All Breeds Supreme Award of the Show.

End of Year Prizegiving

In June 2014 I attended the NZ Welsh Pony & Cob Society AGM in Palmerston North where I was re-elected for another 3 years on the Welsh Council. At the end of year prize giving Nawarrah Park Lady's Man was awarded the Punga Trophy for Inhand showing for the third time, together with the Section B Sires Rating Award, the second year in a row he has claimed the double of the Punga Trophy and the Sires Ratings Award in the same year. Cedar Park Regal Man was runner-up for the Punga Trophy, another double for father and son.

Canterbury All Breeds Foal Show 2014

Hollybank Stud had a great day at the Canterbury Foal Show this year. Hollybank Victory Dance (Cherrington Cadenza IMP x Hazelmere Vanita IMP) was entered in both the coloured and welsh sections. "Cody" was awarded Reserve Champion Coloured Foal and won the NZ Golden Horse sash for the Best Dilute Foal registered with the Society and in the welsh section he was Best Section B Welsh Foal and Reserve Champion Purebred Welsh Foal.

Also competing at the show was Hollybank Penarth (Nawarrah Park Lady's Man IMP x Glenmore Penllwyd IMP) with his new owner Rowan Bartlett and he was awarded the Champion Pony Hunter Foal.

International Visitors

In January we had Jill, Megan and George Howe from Nawarrah Park Stud together with Di Aumann from Pemberton Stud in Victoria. Then in February we were visited by Jenny and Wes Gardiner of Karanga Stud in Victoria, and Fiona and Jack Forge from Kimberley Park in New South Wales. It was a huge thrill for Hollybank Stud to have Nawarrah Park Lady's Man featuring on the cover of the February 2014 edition of the New Zealand Horse & Pony Magazine, together with an article about the Stud. The Horse & Pony Magazine then donated some magazines for Lady's Man to personally autograph with a hoofprint on the front and these were given out as special prizes at the South Island All Welsh Show. Another autographed copy also made its way to the Nawarrah Park Stud in Victoria, Australia where Lady's Man was bred.

The Canterbury Welsh Show in January was certainly one to remember for Hollybank Stud. Although retired to broodmare duties, Bendigo Royal Charm (Milly) was left empty for this season and with the decision made not to Show Nawarrah Park Lady's Man at this year's show, the opportunity was there for Milly to put in an appearance.

We were pretty happy when she was awarded the Section B Adult Championship and her son Hollybank Royal Silver, who is by Lady's Man, was the Champion Section B Youngstock winner. They went up against each other for Supreme B which was won by mum. Milly then went on to win the Best Purebred Welsh Exhibit and topped the day off by beating the Inhand Partbred Supreme for the Supreme Inhand Pony of the day. This entitled her to then return for the second day of the show and she competed against the Supreme Ridden and Champion Harness Exhibits to win the Catherine Howell Trophy for the Supreme Exhibit of the Show.

Hollybank Stud has had a cracking start to the 2013-2014 show season. At Ellesmere A&P Show Skibbereen Serenity (Nellie) was Champion Welsh Pony. At Ashburton A&P Show Nawarrah Park Lady's Man was Champion Welsh Adult and Supreme Welsh Exhibit, Cedar Park Regal Man was Reserve Champion Welsh Youngstock. At Canterbury A&P Show Lady's Man was Champion Welsh Stallion and once again Supreme Welsh Exhibit. Cedar Park Regal Man was Champion Welsh Youngstock, Reserve Champion Ridden Welsh and Champion First Ridden Pony. Then on the first weekend of December we made the big trip south - Cedar was entered for Balclutha A&P Show where he was Champion Welsh. The next day we headed to Gore to the Southland All Welsh Show. Cedar was Champion Section B Youngstock, with Nellie Reserve and then Cedar went on to win the Supreme Purebred Welsh Exhibit.

At the beginning of June I headed off to the NZ Welsh Pony & Cob Society AGM in Invercargill. It was a great chance to catch up with all the welsh people I know, plus meet some new ones! I also managed to end up on the Welsh Council for a one year term.

Nawarrah Park Lady's Man had some very good results at the end of year prize giving.....winning both the Punga Trophy for Overall Inhand Showing as well as the Section B Sires Ratings Award. Two of Lady's Man's progeny, Cedar Park Regal Man and Hollybank Royal Silver also finished in the top 10 for the Punga Trophy. Another successful day for Hollybank Stud with Nawarrah Park Lady's Man taking out Champion Purebred Welsh and his son Cedar Park Regal Man completing the double with Reserve Champion. Hollybank Royal Silver, shown by Philip Peter, also won his yearling class and in the Liz Deans Memorial Class Lady's Man and his two sons were placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Lady's Man was awarded Supreme Welsh Exhibit and then went on to claim the Supreme Inhand of the Show Award, the third year in a row he has done this at Temuka & Geraldine A&P Show and the 6th time in his career that he has won a Supreme All Breeds/Inhand Award.

Methven A&P Show was the last show of the season for Nawarrah Park Lady's Man. Once again he was Champion Adult/Supreme Welsh Exhibit and then went on to win the Supreme Inhand Award for the second year running. Lady's Man has now won an impressive 7 Supreme All Breeds/Inhand Awards from 9 attempts.

Hollybank Stud made a very successful trip south at the weekend to the Otago Taieri A&P Show with Nawarrah Park Lady's Man and his son, Cedar Park Regal Man. NP Lady's Man was awarded Champion Purebred Adult Welsh, Supreme Welsh Exhibit and then went on to claim the Supreme All Breeds Award, the 5th time in his show career that he has achieved this out of the 7 times he has gone forward for a Supreme All Breeds class. Cedar Park Regal Man also had a successful day, winning his two year old class and being awarded Champion Purebred Welsh Youngstock.

Skibbereen Serenity (Nawarrah Park Lady's Man x Kylandee Chintz) had a successful day at the Canterbury All Welsh Show on Saturday, winning Champion Section B Youngstock and Supreme Section B Exhibit under judge Michael Gates from Australia. This is the third year in a row that Hollybank Stud has claimed the Supreme Section B Exhibit at the Canterbury All Welsh and with a different pony each time, in 2011 with Bendigo Royal Charm, in 2012 with Nawarrah Park Lady's Man and in 2013 with Skibbereen Serenity.
